Color blind test

Check your color vision with 20 plates in 3 minutes. Look at each plate and choose the number you see, or press “I can’t see a number”.

Before you start

Use a normal screen at medium-high brightness, turn off night mode or color filters, and sit in a well-lit room.

This is a screening

It is not a medical diagnosis. Screens differ, so only an eye professional can confirm a result.

How to use this tool (step by step)

Small steps, each with the reason behind it. Perfect for beginners, and a handy checklist for experts.

  1. Get ready

    • Sit comfortably about an arm’s length from the screen.
    • Turn up the brightness and switch off any night mode or color filter.
    • Make sure the room is well lit.

Why we do this: Screen settings change colors. Good conditions make the test fairer.

  2. Answer each plate

    • Look at the circle of colored dots for a moment.
    • Press the number you see.
    • If you cannot see a number, press I can’t see a number. Never guess on purpose.

Why we do this: Honest answers, including “I can’t see it”, give the most useful result.

  3. Read your result

    • After 20 plates you see your score for red-green and blue-yellow plates.
    • Read the message under the scores.
    • Press Take the test again to repeat it with new plates.

Why we do this: The pattern of correct and missed plates shows which colors may be harder for you.

  4. If something is unclear

    • Retake the test on a different screen.
    • If you still miss many plates, talk to an optician or eye doctor.
    • Use the Blindness Simulator to check your designs for people with color blindness.

Why we do this: Only a professional test can confirm color vision deficiency.

Questions people ask

Quick answers.

How accurate is this test?

It is a quick screening based on the same idea as classic dot-pattern plates, but screens and lighting vary, so it cannot replace a professional test. The plates are generated by this site and are not the classic printed plates.

Why are the plates different every time?

Each plate is generated with random dots and random numbers, so you cannot memorize the answers.

What do the results mean?

If you read nearly all plates, you likely have typical color vision. Missing several red-green plates suggests a possible red-green deficiency, which is the most common type.
