About HH Color Lab

HH Color Lab is a free collection of browser-based color tools and guides for designers, developers, teachers, students and anyone who works with digital color.

Why this site exists

A color often travels as a short code, but choosing, converting and checking colors involves several different systems that do not always agree. Many tools simply hand you a number. HH Color Lab was built to show how HEX, RGB, HSL, HSV and CMYK relate to each other, how newer models such as Lab and Oklch fit in, and why a result looks the way it does, so you can make better decisions and learn along the way.

What you can do here

How the tools work

Everything runs in your browser, using standard published formulas. Colors are handled in sRGB. HSL, HSV and HWB are direct transformations of RGB. CIE XYZ, Lab, LCh and Luv conversions use standard reference whites, and Oklab and Oklch follow the published Oklab definition. Contrast ratios use the WCAG 2.x relative-luminance formula, color-vision simulations use the Machado et al. matrices, and palettes from images are found with a median-cut algorithm.

Some results are estimates by nature. CMYK values are mathematical conversions; real printing depends on the printer, the paper and the ICC profile. Colors also look different from one screen to another. Where this matters, the tool pages say so.

Corrections and quality

We test the tools on phones, tablets and computers, and we correct mistakes quickly when readers report them. If you find a wrong value, a broken link or an unclear explanation, please tell us and include the page address.
